Once upon a time, there was a crew of friends running a food-oriented club called "Real Food ASU" at Arizona State University. They talked about food justice, harvested food on campus, shared a garden plot at the university, went to shows together, and hosted potlucks that often turned into parties.
After graduating in 2015, they decided to go as a crew to their first camp out festival, Lightning in a Bottle, before many of them moved up to the Pacific Northwest. Because they were all such extra people, they built a home made shade structure, and set up a meal rotation that allowed everyone to cook, and be cooked for throughout the festival.
As time went on, they continued having potlucks at home, and going to more camp out festivals under the collective monikers, "Fannypack Friendz" or "Fanny Camp." The shade structures got bigger and bigger, while the meal rotations fed more and more people.
The community continued to grow in both Oregon and Arizona while attracting individuals from all over the west coast.
By 2017, there was a 22 car caravan carrying 40 people to Oregon Eclipse to build Fanny Camp together. There were a couple veteran Burners in camp at the event that encouraged Fanny Camp to go to Burning Man.
"I don't know if we're ready for that."
"Yes you are, just do this and you'll be fine."
With a newly inspired sense of confidence, they set their sights on Burning Man 2018. Soon after, through a very serendipitous dish washing experience, the crew was invited to bring their camp to Burning Man as part of the Avant Yard Village.
In the months that followed, they began organizing and deciding on what kinds of offerings to bring to Black Rock City. During this period, their signature offering to the playa was hatched out, the Farm to Playa Dinner. This was enable by utilizing produce from a farm run by one of the community's very own.
In January of 2018, some members of the crew hosted a potluck in Portland. One of their friends had invited a woman that they'd met while rock climbing earlier that day. As the night went on, it came to light that this woman had been a leader in a food-oriented club at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo called "Real Food Collaborative." Among many great efforts that they worked on as a crew, they talked about food justice, harvested food on campus, shared a garden plot at the university, went to shows together, and hosted potlucks that often turned into parties.
It was like a meeting of twins separated at birth.
She mentioned that she and her friends had talked about going to Burning Man together that year. After verifying that she was indeed "chill," she and her friends were invited to merge crews for Burning Man 2018.
Not long after, the crew decided that "Fanny Camp" was now "Booty Kitchen."
With a new name and new friends, Booty Kitchen... Booty Kitchen'ded at Black Rock City in 2018.
By the end of the week, they thought the experience was pretty aight, and that they'd probably do it again some time.
